The start of Hogwarts and even the whole Wizarding World can be traced back to a single man named Magus Velorian. According to legend he was the first mystic in existence. No one knows when he first appeared but he was one of the first to exist on earth. Durring that time, the world was in choas, the elements out of control and nothing to govern them. Magus in turn took this as a sign to restore some order to the world. To do this, he gathered 12 people and bestowed them the powers of the mystics, and each one governing a different aspect of the elements. Those elements were:
Fire Water Earth Air Ice Lightning Fate Time Light Life Shadow Death
These 12 were known as the 12 Powers. They also became the Mystic Elders to pass on their knowledge to their children and so forth. However these 12 were still govererned by Magus Velorian the unspoken element. He used the Element known as Spirit, without him there would only be unbalance in the world again.
For a time the world was peaceful and everything was perfect, but slowly the 12 Powers began to be corrupted by their own strength and power that they had been given. Afraid of what could happen if they fought, Magus created the 12 guardians, a group that would have the equal strength of the 12 Powers, but would also cancel out their ability to use any powers. With this he was able to restore order and the powers of the 12 would instead lay dormant in the guardians. Magus seemed satisfied, now the world was in order and the 12 Powers had no real powers other than immortality. They would forever be there as the Mystic Elders. That was his intentions.
The very spot where Hogwarts is now was originally where the 12 Powers resided, eventually the Mystics left out into the world and spawned many villages, but always keeping to themselves. It wasn't sure what happened to the 12 Powers or Magus Velorian...but all of them disappeared. The 12 Powers, the 12 Guardians and Magus Velorian seem to just disappear in time. Mystics however did not, and some even split off...different races came from the Mystic race, though the only one really known is the Elven race. The Shi'ar is one such race but it is only known to those that have seen and met one of the Shi'ar. The knowledge of anyothers has not surface but is not out of the realm of possibility.
The Shadow is a entity that was created from the hatred and spite that came from the most vile of Mystics. To be more exact, Ethelbert Millard. It was through his experiment and his hatred towards not only those not of pure Mystic bloodline but his plan to one day claim a spot among the 12 powers. Ethelbert came across the records of a mystic and somehow figured out the existence of the 12 powers and the 12 guardians. The Shadow is the natural enemy of the Mystics ever since they first came into being.
The Shadow was brought in to bring down the 12 Guardians forcing the 12 Powers out of hiding so that Ethelbert would be able to take one of their places. Once there then he would hold immense power and not even the 12 Powers themselves could get in his way. However Ethelbert knows nothing of the unsaid element of spirit.
There has been times through out the history of the world where the Shadow had its time of power causing great confusion and manipulating the people of the public, but of course the entire world could not see through the mask the Shadow had put on them. Only the Mystics are able to see this. The Shadow has been defeated several times but it never truly disappeared...only in hiding until it could rise to power again. Ethelbert meanwhile has waited in the background for the Guardians to appear, and the actual age of Ethelbert is unknown.
The last time the shadow came to power was 100 years ago when Hogwarts was closed down. The events around it are foggy at best. A young boy named Alexander Azariah Belisario, who was forced to live with the Shadow inside of him. Slowly the Shadow corrupted him and overtook his body and began taking out the students and professors in the school. The Shadow had its grip on Hogwarts and would kill everyone and from there move out into the world. It was the first time the Shadow had such power.

The Headmaster made a desperate move and used a ancient Mystic spell to seal the entire school and its population, moving them to an entirely different realm of existence entirely. It was a bold move, all the students and Professors were killed in the seal, but the Shadow was confined in the seal in the end. And Ethelbert was unable to act to break it free and instead was forced to take another way of action.
Headmistress Miranda Lockehart was compelled to reopen the school from a last wish from her father, urging her to reopen it and to succeed where he had to failed. Ethelbert Millard had worked himself up to Minister of Magic, using his power of deception and manipulation he had assured it so, and also waving anything by from getting in Miranda's way from reopening the school. He used the students in the school to find the seal for him and so that he could break it free. The energy through Hogwarts has changed and Mystics were drawn to the opening to the school as well as other races throughout the world. The power among the students was amazing and soon revealed to be none other than the 12 Guardians among the students!
Soon the Shadow began to leak through the seal and influencing the Guardians, in a attempt to corrupt them. Janus Valerian and Rhianna Llewelyn in a struggle against the Shadow, broke the seal on the Shadow but in the process freed the boy known as Alexander Azariah Belisario. The Shadow disappeared for a while as things began to settle down and return to normal. Alex was able to begin a regular life, but soon found that he was the Guardian of the Shadow, and that he had the only real power over it. But before he had realized his full potential the Shadow had corrupted someone that no one would have thought possible. Janus Valerian. The Shadow in control of his body took up a new name as Ashtaroth, named after a demon in Hebrew lore. Several people were killed in the attacks, but Alex stood up to him and managed to vanish him for a time...but it would not be for long.
The Guardians gathered for one last stand against the Shadow and the revealed villian Ethelbert Millard, as they fought it was a losing battle. The Shadow killed many of the Guardians until it got to Rhianna, the Guardian of the Wind. Janus Valerian, confronted with her managed to break the hold...but however it would be a losing battle, so he did the only thing he could do at that moment...he connected with the Guardian of Time and unlocked a ancient spell. The spell propelled the world back in time, bringing some back to life and shifting the order of events.
Now in the present the Guardians are coming to Hogwarts yet again, thinking it is their first time here. Events will unfold again, but none will remember. However as time begins to heal itself in the drastic change memories will start to fall into place into the students. And the Guardians being the central key to the struggle against the Shadow and Ethelbert, but will they be able to stop him this time?
